Scholarships

Each year, WCTFCU awards 5 scholarships to exemplary WCTFCU Members who are graduating high school seniors and enrolled to begin college in the fall as incoming Freshmen at an accredited, not-for-profit college or university.

Recipients are selected through an anonymous review of all applications and voted on by the Scholarship Committee, a subcommittee of the WCTFCU Board of Directors. 
 

Scholarship applications are accepted March 15 through May 15 with an online application that will be available on the Credit Union’s website.

Winners are awarded at a ceremony in July.  Members who submit an application but do not receive a scholarship, will be notified in late July.

Note:  The scholarships listed below were offered in 2023 and subject to change in 2024.

WCTFCU Scholarships

 

General Studies 2-Year Scholarship - $10,000 Total

• One 2-year scholarship, granted at $5,000 per year, to the most outstanding student pursuing any field of study.
• Total grant is $10,000; initial $5,000 grant given at July ceremony. The second (consecutive) year grant of $5,000 will be awarded based upon Freshman year GPA.
• Prior to June 15th, recipient must submit their Spring transcript along with a letter addressed to the Scholarship Committee stating that the student is in good standing and will return for their Sophomore year. The Committee will review and consider for approval of renewal.

John F. Cronan Scholarship 1-Year Scholarship - $5,000 Total
Established in 2020, this 1-time $5,000 scholarship is granted to an exemplary WCTFCU member, who is a Waterbury Resident, and a graduating Senior from a Waterbury Public High School (Wilby, Kennedy, Crosby, Waterbury Arts Magnet School, Waterbury Career Academy). 

General Studies 1-Year Scholarships - $10,000 Total
Two recipients, will each receive a one-time award for $5,000. The scholarships will be given to outstanding students pursuing any field of study.

Jean O’Brien Memorial Scholarship for 4 years - $20,000 Total
This 4-year, $5,000 per year scholarship, is granted to one student who has committed to an Education Major and a career in education.
•The initial $5,000 grant is given at the July Scholarship Ceremony.
•To receive the next 3 consecutive years' grants of $5,000 each, the recipient must submit their year-end college transcript every year by June 15th showing that they have completed Education Major courses and maintained a satisfactory GPA.
•The transcript should be accompanied by a letter, written to the Scholarship Committee, stating the student's good standing with their college, and their continued commitment to an Education Major and pursuit of a career in education.
